The world is ablaze with the controversial topic of climate change. Despite those that believe it not to be a ‘thing’, others are taking extreme (and innovative) measures to tackle the global issue. One such warrior in the wake of the world’s warming is Italian architect Stefano Boeri. While we’ve seen immense strides and initiatives being introduced in different areas, this maverick is looking up… at buildings. His idea of “vertical forests” is really taking off. His goal is to create structures which are inhabited by trees and plants, thus making living conditions – and the environment at large – better and greener.

Nanjing Towers

Boeri’s first project has taken place in Nanjing, China. This location is very fitting since the city suffers from severe pollution. The towers were completed in 2018, and they’re a sight to behold. In total, the buildings will have more than 1,000 growing trees and 2,500 shrubs. Can you imagine that? The total amount of oxygen each vertical forest is expected to produce is approximately 132 pounds or 60 kg per day. It takes something unique to both give you oxygen, and take your breath away.

Growing Projects

China might have been the first step, but it is most certainly not the last. Stefano has plans to expand in Switzerland and Italy too. Many of those interested in his work, are aware that his Milan-based project is already in existence. What has caught the attention of the masses now is his desire to expand his ambitions far, far beyond.

Another Planet

If you thought that Stefano’s aspirations stop at high-rise buildings, then you’re mistaken. He has openly stated that exploring past the confines of our Earth might just be necessary. He and his team believe that irreversible climate change damage will be inevitable by 2117, meaning we’ll have to have a ‘plan B’. His backup plan is the red planet. So, Mars 2117?
